Crying foul over politicisation of the rural jobs scheme, Chief Minister Mayawati has written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, alleging a "preconcieved agenda" of Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh.

Mayawati in her letter on Friday alleged that the letter Ramesh wrote to her was leaked to the media much before it reached her office. She slammed Ramesh for accusing the state government by making his claims on MGNREGA on the basis of information provided to him by a Chitrakoot-based NGO.

The rural development minister in a letter to Mayawati, dated October 24, had alleged large-scale anomalies in the implementation of the Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and demanded a CBI probe.

He had stated in his letter that the state government's inaction sent a clear signal to the perpetrators that if they enjoyed the patronage of the powers that be, they could openly flout rules and make money from embezzlement of MGNREGA funds.

Mayawati hit back on Friday claiming that Ramesh has passed sweeping remarks for the entire state, comprising of 75 districts, by just getting a feedback from seven districts.

She said that even in the seven districts concerned action has already been taken against six chief development officers, seven project directors, 28 block development officers and more than 40 field level officials.

The chief minister in her letter to the PM has also stated that Ramesh has made baseless allegations regarding inaction on National Level Monitors (NLMs). Of the 67 NLMs received by the UP government, detailed Action Taken Report on 49 has already been submitted to the Centre. Action on other reports is underway and suspension or disciplinary action against 27 class-I officials, 38 class-II officials, and 69 class-III officials along with 236 field level officials has already been taken by the state government.

Mayawati has said that, ironically, Ramesh had earlier appreciated various steps taken by the state government but was now trying to politicise the rural jobs scheme.

With the elections to the state fast approaching the war of words between the ruling BSP and the Congress is getting intensified with both looking to score points over each other.
