Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati's assets doubled to Rs. 111.64 crores (approx. $22 million) during her term as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.

In her affidavit filed along with the nomination for the Rajya Sabha (upper house of Parliament) elections on Tuesday, Mayawati has declared total assets of Rs 111.64 crore, which is more than double of Rs. 52 crore she declared in May 2007 when she contested for the state legislative council elections after becoming chief minister. In 2010, when she contested for the state legislative council elections again, she had declared total assets of Rs 88 crore.

On Tuesday, her affidavit showed immovable assets worth Rs 96.38 crore and movable over Rs 15.26 crore.

She owns two commercial properties in Connaught Place (B-34 ground floor and B-34 1st floor with area respectively of 3628.02 and 4535.02 square feet) costing Rs 9.36 and Rs 9.45 crores in Delhi. She has two residential buildings one in New Delhi (23,24 SP Marg New Delhi) one in Lucknow (9 Mall Avenue) currently valued at Rs 61.86 crores and Rs 15.68 crores. Both the residential buildings were purchased in 2009 and 2010 when she was the chief minister. The commercial buildings were purchased in 2004 and 2005.

Mayawati has cash worth Rs. 14 crore in banks, according to the affidavit. Among other assets she has mentioned murals worth Rs 15 lakh and revolver worth Rs 53900. Besides, she owns a silver dinner set of 18.5 kg worth Rs 9.32 lakh and diamond/gold jewellery worth Rs. 95 lakh.

In the loans or dues column the affidavit shows Rs 87,68,724 as security from tenants (Bata India Ltd and V.C Solutions Pvt Limited). The BSP president has Rs.6,51,53,538 as total income in tax return for the financial year 2010-11 against her PAN no. ABCPM1284D.

She has no agriculture land nor is there any mention of vehicles in the declarations.

In 2007, she had declared that her movable and immovable assets were Rs 52.27 lakh while Rs 12.88 crore deposited in banks, financial institutions and non-banking financial companies. Mayawati had also disclosed that her gold, diamonds and silver were worth Rs. 50,87,529. She also owned murals worth Rs 15 lakh. She had declared that she owned three commercial and two residential buildings in New Delhi and Lucknow.

The swearing-in ceremony took place even as sulking Rawat and his supporters were closeted at his residence in Delhi and were deliberating their next strategy after the High Command rejected the Union Minister's demand that he be made the Chief Minister.

Rawat, a Rajput leader who was elected to Lok Sabha first in 1980 defeating BJP's Murli Manohar Joshi, was pipped to the post in the race for chief ministership when Sonia Gandhi chose Bahuguna, a Brahmin, for the post.

Since then, Rawat, minister of state for agriculture and parliamentary affairs, had been upset and had made it plain to the party that he has been overlooked a second time after ND Tiwari was preferred over him 10 years ago.

As the revolt raged, there was uncertainty whether the party would have a rethink.

But AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi ruled out any change of chief minister nominee.

"Senior leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Birendera Singh have left for Dehradun as central observers and the swearing in of Bahuguna as chief minister is being held as scheduled," he said.

Even as Bahuguna was taking oath, Pradeep Tamta, a Congress MP and close aide of Rawat, breathed fire outside Rawat's residence in Delhi saying they would refuse to accept Bahuguna as their leader because he worked against the party during the elections.

The party high command had played game with Rawat earlier which has been repeated again. "At that time we accepted it because it was Tiwari who was big in stature. This time we will not accept," he said.

Asked about the number of MLAs supporting Rawat and what will be their strategy during confidence vote, Tamta said they would disclose the strategy at the right time.

Queried whether their group has the support of 17 MLAs, he said, "we have that much and more than that. We will let you know the number as and when it is required."

He denied reports that Rawat had either met or spoken to BJP president Nitin Gadkari or any other BJP leaders.
