‘Break the nexus between builders and politicians'

'Land being grabbed from poor through malpractices'

Social activist Medha Patkar and over 50 others were detained for some time by the police here on Tuesday after they barged into the Adarsh housing society and staged a protest, demanding the demolition of the building and the scrapping of Rule 3K under the Maharashtra Slum Act.

“Adarsh is the symbol of their paradigm of development. They don't have the courage to demolish it. We seek its demolition. We brought this entire matter to their notice,” she said, referring to the National Alliance of People's Movements' complaint against the society.

She said the demolition of slums should stop as the slum-dwellers “are the original inhabitants of the city.” Ms. Patkar opposed the evacuation of the fishermen community in Sion-Koliwada. “Involve them in the development, seek their consent.”

According to her, there was an unholy nexus among the builders, the politicians and the bureaucrats which needed to be broken.

Ms. Patkar accused Shivalik Ventures, involved in many slum redevelopment projects, of using malpractices to grab the land from the poor. She alleged that 50 per cent of the investment in the company came from Unitech, now under the scanner for its alleged role in the 2G scam and the Niira Radia tapes.

“Unitech is one of the offender corporations and it is being investigated under the 2G spectrum probe. Those who have lent them the loans have gone to High Court because their loans have not been recovered. It is the same company involved in the alleged rehabilitation of people here,” she said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone I, Cherring Dorje said the police detained the activists along with Ms. Patkar for assembling in the building without permission. “They were let off after some time,” Mr. Dorje said.
