The government on Friday said that it would not play big brother with regard to the media and hoped that any course correction required would come from the media itself.

In a statement on the occasion of National Press Day, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and I&B minister Manish Tewari came out support of self-regulation, which was in sharp contrast with Press Council chief Markandey Katju seeking greater regulatory control over media.

Advocating self-regulation, the PM said, "It is true that sometimes irresponsible journalism can have serious consequences for social harmony and public order, which the public authorities have an obligation to maintain, but censorship is no answer. It is for the members of the Fourth Estate themselves to collectively ensure that objectivity is promoted and sensationalism is curbed. It is for them to introspect how best they can serve our country and society and advance our well-being."

Tewari echoed the PM's views when he said, "Notwithstanding aberrations that concern most of us...the media industry more than anybody else is cognizant with the need for self-correction...Self-regulation is the way forward," he said.

The minister said, "There will be no attempt by the government to become big brother or police this sector." He said that while there was need for introspection and a vigorous debate, freedom of speech was "not negotiable." He also assured that no step towards regulation would be taken without the consensus of all stakeholders.
