Over a year after the Zamrudpur site mishap that killed seven people due to a cantilever pillar collapse, the Delhi Metro has issued a notification debarring Gammon India from participating in any Delhi Metro Rail Corporation contract. Gammon India, the contractor executing the Metro construction project on the affected stretch, has also been slapped with a penalty of Rs 5 crore.

Delhi Metro blamed “deficiency” in design and material for the Zamrudpur site mishap on July 12, 2009 and decided to issue a show-cause notice to Gammon India asking it to explain why it should not be blacklisted for two years. After a year of correspondence between the contractor and DMRC, the reply to the showcause notice was found unsatisfactory.

“It has been decided that the contractor will be debarred from participating in Delhi Metro contracts for the next two years (starting October 20) and will have to pay a penalty of Rs 5 crore,” said a DMRC spokesperson.

The three-member panel that investigated the collapse of an under-construction bridge at Zamrudpur said in its report that the cantilever design was faulty and provision of steel at different points was not adequate.
