Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) after reaching a saturation point in sanctioning of works like digging of nadis' (small water reservoirs), making gravel roads and plantations etc, is now focusing on improving the economic standard of the SC/ST and those in the Below Poverty Line' (BPL) category.

Till now the works undertaken in the rural employment scheme were aimed at public utility, however the gram panchayats covered under the scheme have no work left of public utility. Hence, the government has now shifted its focus to personal utility under the MGNREGS to extend benefits to the rural populace by making them self reliant.

Now the new works include construction of a water harvesting structure (tanka) in the farms and boundary around the farms, plantation of 25 fruit trees and leveling of the land. According to the additional district project coordinator (MGNREGS) R C Gupta this has received good response. Aimed at providing benefit to people from SC/ST and BPL category initially, the scheme comes under Category 4 of Individual Beneficiary Scheme.

Gupta said, "We had begun under MGNREGS the extensive coverage of gram panchayats by constructing nadis', gravel roads and other works and plantation. However, now we have reached a state of saturation and today all the gram panchayats have nadis' and gravel roads." He added, "Now we will check the feasibility of the work done like nadis' and considering this, we have stopped giving sanctions for fresh construction of them, at least in Jodhpur district."

However, this does not mean that the government will wind up the scheme. Gupta said, "So as a next step, we have started taking works of personal utility, which will not only help in improving the economic standard of the individual but will also help in meeting the objectives of the government like water conservation and plantation."
