HUBLI (Karnataka): At least 14 students fell ill in government school in Karnataka's Dharwad district after drinking milk supplied under a government scheme on Monday.

Soon after the morning prayer, students of the Kannada Government Girls' Primary school in Kusugal village queued up to have milk under 'Ksheer Bhagya' scheme. Within minutes, a girl complained of stomach pain and started vomiting. Within half an hour, 13 other students complained of dizziness and severe ache.

Tension ran high as some students went home complaining of stomach pain. As the news spread, panic-stricken parents rushed to the school.

The government had assigned the responsibility of supplying milk to Adamya Chetana, an NGO. On the first day, the children were asked to bring tumblers to drink milk. The school has strength of 327 students from classes I to VII.

Speaking to TOI, S M Pawar, a teacher, said, "We served milk to around 300 students. One of the girls started vomiting and complained of stomach pain. We immediately took her to hospital. Later, some other students complained of stomach ache and we shifted them to the KIMS hospital. We had sampled the milk before serving it to the children. Only 9 or 10 students had stomach ache; others had no problem."

Head of the KIMS paediatric department Dr T A Shepur said 14 students were brought to the hospital with complaints of stomach ache and burning sensation.

"They complained of stomach pain after half an hour of drinking the milk. They will be discharged on Tuesday. We suspect it might be a case of food poisoning. There is nothing to worry as all children are stable," he added.

Hubli Rural block education officer M L Hanchate said the government would conduct an inquiry.

Nandakumar of Adamya Chetana said, "As per the government's order, the KMF provides us milk powder. We prepare milk according to government norms and supply it to children. We are awaiting the doctors' report to know the exact reason for the children falling ill."
