Mining ban in Karnataka may push up steel prices by Rakhi Mazumdar

Steelmakers and mine owners, reeling under a ban on mining in Karnataka, are keeping their fingers crossed about the Supreme Court hearing scheduled on Friday.

The uncertainty in iron ore and the resultant rise in ore prices have led the steel industry to actively consider an upward revision in prices, just days after most companies mentioned of keeping product price levels unchanged.

"Iron ore spot prices have been rising by $1-2 daily since the ban came into effect last week. Prices have already crossed $150 per tonne," H Noor Ahmed, vicepresident, Federation of Indian Mineral Industries and partner of Bellary-based Trident Minerals said. "Most plants have been hit by the ban and mining activity has come to a grinding halt. Karnataka accounts for some 25% of the steel produced in India.

If this situation continues, it may have an impact on steel prices," Ahmed added. Already, the country's largest private steelmaker by capacity, JSW Steel, which sources ore from Bellary is being forced to shut down some of its furnaces and go in for a 30-40 % production cut.

Unless the situation improves, tight supply of finished steel will jack up prices, say industry executives . This is despite the promised price rollover by producers in August.

Already the marketing departments of large steel firms are considering a hike by about . 750 to . 1,000 a tonne, due to the shortage in iron ore stemming from the ban on mining at Bellary . However, companies may not publicly announce the prices revisions.

This is likely to impact most sectors of the economy as the alloy is widely used in consumer goods, cars and in construction and will imply a rise in the prices of most products.

CS Verma, chairman of stateowned SAIL, and one of the largest players in the country, said the crisis is temporary in nature and will not have an impact medium or long-term . "I do not think the Bellary crisis will impact steel prices, per se. Moreover, low demand in the monsoon season will contain any adverse impact on steel industry. It is only after monsoon that steel demand picks up," he said.
