Pune: Even as the Supreme Court had directed that Aadhaar cards are not compulsory to avail LPG subsidy, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has asked oil companies to make it mandatory and has set February 1 as deadline for customers to link their Aadhaar cards with banks.

With Pune among the districts being covered under Direct Benefit Transfer scheme to avail LPG subsidy, oil companies have made it clear that customers should link Aadhaar card number and consumer number or else they would lose out on subsidy and as a result will have to buy non-subsidised cylinders.

Vijay Bhave, Chairman, Maharashtra Gas Distributors Association, said they have not issued any notification to this effect. "Since the petroleum ministry has insisted on the linkage we are reaching out to citizens to clear the confusion and have asked them to provide their Aadhaar card details to us,'' said Bhave.

Even as the Supreme Court had send notices on Aadhar linkage, there was no clear directive to the state government and the government officials had maintained that the Aadhaar card linkage was a must to avail subsidy and continued the process.

As of now, a dismal 4.5 lakh Aadhar linkages have been completed in the district with 30 lakh consumers, said Bhave.

"If the remaining population fails to make Aadhaar cards or give their number within this time frame, they would have to buy non-subsidised cylinders which costs Rs 984 in PMC and PCMC,'' he added.

Pune District Collector Vikas Deshmukh said they have not received any instructions from the state government and the work of linking was on. "We have not got any directives from the state government after the SC judgement,'' said the collector.

Meanwhile, huge rush has been reported from all the gas agencies with employees finding it difficult to link and check details of each customer.

Usha Poonawala, President, Maharashtra LPG Association, said, "We are unable to attend to all customers as the entire day employees are busy checking details of customers and forwarding it to the Bank of Maharashtra for linkage. The customers should ideally submit the details directly to the banks but the responsibility has been put on the agencies, making it difficult for us as well as the consumers.''

The agencies are surprised that the petroleum ministry has issued guidelines, making the Aadhaar card compulsory to avail subsidy despite Supreme Court directive.
