MIWA extends support to protesting villagers by Vineet Gill

The Manesar Industrial Welfare Association has extended its support to the villagers who have been staging a protest against the states recent land acquisition plan, which has effectively zeroed in on several villages near the IMT.

Representatives and residents of over 10 villages in Manesar have joined hands with MIWA and are urging the rest of the industrial community in Gurgaon and Manesar to support them against the HSIIDC.

More than 1800 acres of land, right next to the KMP, have been earmarked by the HSIIDC for commercial setups, but the people, to whom the land belongs, are not amenable to the idea of giving away their land in the name of development.

Industrialist members of MIWA said instead of this idle talk of industrial development and indiscreet land-grabbing, the HSIIDC must help develop the village communities by implementing the  NREGA programmes here. Compensating villagers for their land means nothing. The only way to empower them is to give them a chance to utilize this land instead of taking it away, said an MIWA representative.

MIWA has already been active in villages like Kaasan, where it has supported building up nurseries and planting fruit trees to make the land more financially viable.

Several people have been working under the governments NREGA scheme in Kaasan helping maintain and plant the nurseries. Such activities generate employment. But once you take the land away, you not only uproot these people, but also leave them in the lurch, said another MIWA member.

The industrial community has also been pointing out HSIIDCs inefficiencies with regard to the civic and infrastructural issues that exist in the IMT. Hundreds of units in the IMT do not even function. The sewerage plant is in a shambles. Basic issues like power, water and roads are not dealt with. Why doesnt HSIIDC first try to manage what they have, and think of expansions later? asked an industrialist.

A senior HSIIDC official said the villagers will be compensated for the land, and HSIIDC will be adopting these villages too. Besides, the villagers will also be given annuity every year. The land rates have been decided by the SC, so there is no dispute there. Also, this will generate thousands of jobs, said the official.
