TRICHY: From now one, children in some of the anganwadi centres under the integrated child development services (ICDS) scheme in Trichy can relish new varieties of mixed food served during lunch.

The scheme was introduced in 93 centres in Manikandam block and 119 centres in project-I in the city on Monday. The new scheme would ensure that four different varieties of mixed food prepared with vegetables will be served to the children. The usual mixed rice will be served the remaining days. The objective of the scheme is to provide the children tasty food so that they are attracted towards consuming nutritious food.

The menu for every week will be tomato rice with boiled egg on Mondays, mixed rice with boiled Bengal gram or green gram dhal on Tuesdays, vegetable biryani with boiled egg on Wednesdays, lemon rice with boiled egg on Thursdays, dhal rice with boiled potato on Fridays and mixed rice on Saturdays and Sundays.

In fact, the scheme was taken up as a pilot project in 86 centres in Andhanallur block on November 2, 2012. Since then, varieties of mixed rice were served to 2,058 children in the block. Officials claimed that the children were receptive to the new menu and therefore they decided to extend the programme to the rest of the centres in the district. "The response for the varieties of mixed rice was immense from the children in Andhanallur block in the pilot project and it made us decide to take up the project in all the centres in the district. We were told to extend the programme to 20% of the centres in the district initially," ICDS project officer A Thamim Munisha told TOI.

She also said the growth of the children after taking the mixed rice varieties has been good. In Trichy, there are 1,828 anganwadis in 16 blocks. With the introduction of the scheme in two blocks on Monday, as many as 6,888 students will be covered under this programme as of now.
