Alarmed by ministerial turf wars thwarting his GoM's bid to "expedite" environment clearances and coal supply to eight power projects identified by the Prime Minister's Office, Sharad Pawar is learnt to have sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's "intervention" to ensure the GoM's decisions are "implemented in a time-bound manner".

Pawar was made chairman of the GoM on environmental and developmental issues relating to coal mining and other development projects last year.

Warning against "procedural delay or impractical interpretation of statute" hampering developmental needs, the GoM, in its meeting on February 18, is learnt to have directed the environment and coal ministries to sort out issues pertaining to the eight projects.

"However, I am given to understand that the ministry of coal and ministry of environment and forests are yet to initiate the process to implement these decisions. There is an urgent need that they should jointly identify the constraints limiting our ability to expand domestic production of coal and come out with appropriate strategy," Pawar was learnt to have written to the PM recently.

"I would like to request your kind intervention... so that GoM decisions are implemented in a time-bound manner," said Pawar in his letter, pointing out that over Rs 7,00,000 crore worth of infrastructure projects were stuck.
