Mohali is slated to become one of the first districts in the country where preparations for issuing Unique Identification Numbers (UID) are scheduled to commence from February 15.

District administration officials said that once the process of compiling data is commenced from the middle of this month, it would take at least four months for the disbursal of the 12-digit UID to residents of the district to start and would be completed by September-end.

Speaking to TOI, Mohali deputy commissioner Parveen Kumar said that the exercise would commence on February 15 and for the purpose special enrolment centres would be set up all across the district so that residents were not made to travel a large distance to avail the facility.

He said, ''The residents would be required to fill up forms using their photo, name, address, sex, date of birth, father's or husband's name along with fingerprints of all 10 fingers and retina scan. Kumar said that there
would be no ceiling limit on the age of the applicant and they would be required to have stayed at their current residential address for at least six months to be eligible to apply. He added that applicants do not necessarily require to be Indian citizens, but should be residents of the country.

He said that for anyone to enroll for the scheme, they would be required to bring a ration card, voter ID card, bank account details or PAN card for identification. For those persons who do not have any of the above-mentioned documents, they would be required to bring along an introducer. The task of the introducer would be to just act as a introducer, as is required to be done in a bank when opening a new account.

He added that the scheme would prove to be extremely beneficial for BPL families living in the district and would also help clamp down on frauds committed during pension withdrawals, NREGA daily wages and direct bank payments.
