PUNE: Conditions are again favorable for the advance of the southwest monsoon towards India after nearly a week-long lull from May 29, according to the latest India Meteorological Department ( IMD) forecast.

Monsoon is expected to reach Kerala by June 3 with a possible error margin of four days. The onset of the season in Kerala signals the arrival of monsoon over the Indian subcontinent.

"Hardly any advance of the monsoon was observed from May 20 -25. It showed just a little progress on May 26 and 27, and conditions are favorable for it again from May 29,'' said Medha Khole, deputy direction general of meteorology (weather forecasting) on Tuesday. "We would be able to better forecast its progress into India only once it hits Kerala.''

IMD's long-range forecasting has estimated all-India average rainfall this year to be 98%, a review of which is expected in June.
