Days after the High Court here struck down the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today announced the state would double the monthly aid to Singur landlosers to Rs 2,000 a month.

The announcement of an increase of Rs 1,000 in monthly allowances to Singur farmers was made by the All India Trinamool Congress on Twitter, quoting the chief minister.

Earlier, the state government had announced a monthly aid of Rs 1,000 to farmers as compensation for their land. Today’s announcement would be effective from July 1.
The state government also plans to extend the reach of Rs 1,000-per-month assistance scheme to 2,000 additional sharecroppers and bargadars. “According to a government scheme, about 1,000 destitute farmers are given Rs 1,000 as assistance a month. However, some sharecroppers and bargadars are also affected by the court order. Also, there are cases in which farmers’ cheques were taken by others.

We want to provide aid to all of them,” said state agriculture minister Rabindranath Bhattacharya.

Bhattacharya said under the proposal, a total of 3,000 affected people would receive the monthly assistance. Currently, only landlosers “who did not receive the cheque for compensation” are entitled to the allowance.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Banerjee is likely to hold another meeting with party leaders, legal experts and intellectuals to discuss the government's next move following the high court order. Apart from moving the Supreme Court and introducing a new Bill, the option of initiating negotiations with the Tatas is also likely to be discussed in the meeting.

While some legal experts feel a new Bill should be introduced, a section of party leaders like Bhattacharya have suggested the government should consider the option of negotiating with the Tatas to resolve the impasse. “My personal opinion is there is no harm in negotiating with the Tatas....Our fight is not with the Tatas. Our purpose is to protect the interests of the affected farmers,” Bhattacharya had said.
