For the 6,000 people marching to Mumbai from the forest villages of Jalgaon and Nandurbar demanding their rights over forest land, there is some hope. Maharashtra Minister of State for Tribal Development Rajendra Gavit visited the protesters in Kasara taluka near Nashik on Friday and agreed to concede some of the demands raised by the Adivasis.

Mr. Gavit went as a representative of Chief Minsiter Prithviraj Chavan, who on Thursday promised that the State would review the demands for proper implementation of the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006. He was accompanied by Tribal Development Commissioner D.S. Rajurkar.

According to Pratibha Shinde of the Lok Sangharsha Morcha, the visit was successful. “The pressure created by the 6,000 people walking 500 km for 15 days has worked on the government,” she told The Hindu over telephone.

One of the most important demands that were conceded was grant of community rights in Jalgaon and Nandurbar areas, where no claims have been accepted yet. According to the website of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, as of 31 January 2011 only 423 claims of community rights have been granted in Maharashtra out of 3,988 applications.

Mr. Gavit declared that no area would be declared as a ‘critical wildlife zone' if there was an inherent tribal population living there.

Added to that, 75 forest villages of Nandurbar district would be converted into revenue villages within a month.

The protesters will now proceed towards Mumbai where, at another meeting on Tuesday, they will press more demands, including granting equal weightage to all 13 documents of proof for claiming the land as mentioned in the Act.
