More farmers to opt cotton crop

The cotton growing area is expected to increase by at least 10 per cent during this season because farmers are getting Rs 3,200 per quintal while the Cotton Corporation of India has fixed the minimum support price at Rs 3,000 per quintal.

During last year, cotton-sowing area in Andhra Pradesh was increased to 34 lakh acre from 32 lakh acre. This year, it is expected to increase to 38 lakh acre. During 2009-10, India produced 1,52 lakh bales and cotton yield is now expected to touch 1.75 lakh bales.

Recently, the Central government lifted the ban on cotton exports because the demand for cotton is increasing in international market.

Cotton exporters also getting orders from Russia, China, Pakistan, Burma, Mexico and Indonesia. Demand for cotton is increasing in the domestic market also. Buyers who so far purchased cotton at Rs 3,000 and Rs 3100 are now purchasing it at Rs 3200 and Rs 3300 per quintal, depending on quality.

Mr Komati Sambasiva Rao, a farmer in Ravela village of the district said that he had cultivated cotton in over eight acre last year and got profit up to Rs 20,000 per acre.

He said that he used Bt cotton seed because he need not use pesticides. This year, he had decided to cultivate cotton in over 12 acre.

He said that if rains come in time, the yield would increase.
