The groundswell of public opinion is firmly against South Korean steelmaker Posco. Of the 536 farmers whose lands are to be acquired for the proposed Rs 32,000-crore integrated steel plant, 365 have said a clear 'no' .

Just 25 farmers have agreed to hand over land provided they are paid a compensation of Rs 25 lakh per acre. The proposed compensation could be between Rs 4 lakh and Rs 8 lakh an acre.

The Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board has been conducting hearings since July 4. But the government's attempts to acquire land from farmers in Halligudi and surrounding villages are running into trouble. An overwhelming number of farmers have filed objections, some in blood, against land acquisition.

Land officer gets marching orders

"Though KIADB will hear another 106 farmers, it'll hardly make any difference,'' said a senior KIADB officer. The fallout has been swift: KIADB Special Acquisition Officer Mahantesh Bilagi was given marching orders on Tuesday. The new SLAO could be here by Thursday, but hearings have been suspended.

Preliminary notices were served under Section 28(1) of the KIADB Act. So far, 390 farmers filed written objections against land acquisition. After the final hearing, KIADB will issue the notification and finalize the compensation.
Farmers' protests are also gaining momentum with several organizations extending support. They got a boost from Sri Siddalingaswami of Sri Tontadarya Mutt of Gadag, who is regularly conducting meetings to educate farmers and garner their support.

Though the state government says it will try to convince locals on the benefits of the project, the situation is getting tougher by the day. On Wednesday, industries minister Murgesh R Nirani telephoned Siddalingaswami seer to convince him to drop the agitation , saying: "We will not acquire land forcibly. Land acquisition will be done peacefully by the district administration'' . The seer went ahead with the meeting in Halligudi saying: "Politicians are politicians . We can't trust them. This government too is not trustworthy.''
