Most murders by spurned lovers in Andhra and UP, says crime study -Varinder Bhatia

When it comes to murders due to "betrayals" in "love affairs or sexual relationships", Andhra Pradesh heads the list with 4,901 deaths, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 4,200 deaths in the period between 2001-2012, according to a study conducted by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

The study lists different categories of motives and causes of murders in the country - "gain, property dispute, love affairs or sexual relationships, dowry, lunacy, witchcraft, communalism, casteism, class conflict, political reasons and terrorist/ extremist activity". Of these, the three main reasons why people are murdered are: "property disputes, personal vendetta or enmity and love affairs or sexual relationships".

The maximum murders (45,860) were committed due to "personal vendetta", with Uttar Pradesh leading the list with 6,156 killings.

Of the 35,668 murder cases due to "property dispute", Bihar topped the list with 9,909 deaths. As many as 28,145 people were killed due to "betrayals" in "love affairs or sexual relationships". Besides Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, the other states leading the list in this category are Maharashtra (3,253) and Madhya Pradesh (2,589).

On an average, 32,000-34,000 people are murdered every year in India.

Uttar Pradesh recorded the maximum murders in the last decade (65,443), followed by Bihar (41,245), Maharashtra (32,767) and Madhya Pradesh (28,399).

According to the study, Jammu and Kashmir saw the most deaths (4,695) due to "terrorist/ extremist activity", followed by Chhattisgarh (1,043), Manipur (1,031) and Assam (735 murders).

Sikkim recorded the least number of murders (166) in the period.
