BHOPAL: The Lokayukta on Sunday raided the residence of a village school headmaster in Mandsaur and recovered undisclosed assets amounting to more than Rs 2.5 crore. The headmaster of the government middle school in Amlavad village, Ram Dayal Joshi (45), joined service in 1995. In 17 years since he became a school teacher, he amassed wealth including eight hectares of agricultural land, a huge plot in Urban Mandsaur, a house and a large quantity of jewellery.

Ram Dayal Joshi hit headlines in local newspapers three years ago when he was allegedly caught selling government supplied school textbooks meant for distribution in state run schools to the scrap dealer. An investigation ensued with accusations that Joshi, who was then the education officer at the Janpadh level, used to pocket the money by selling government supplied free textbooks. He was promptly demoted and transferred as headmaster of the middle school in Amlavad where he still works. During his days as Janpadh education officer, he was in-charge of distributing midday meals and construction work in all schools under his jurisdiction.

On Sunday morning, the Ujjain office of the Lokayukta knocked on Joshi's door. Thereafter, the team of eight Lokayukta officials raided the premises to unearth ill-gotten wealth amassed to the tune of crores. According to Lokayukta DSP Om Prakash Savoria, the team found Rs 10 lakh in fixed deposits made in the name of Joshi's wife Rachna in two separate banks. There was also 3.5 kg of silver and 150 grams of gold ornaments.

The school teacher, whose gross salary does not exceed Rs 32,000 per month, purchased a huge plot of eight hectare agricultural land in his native Anki village in the Bhanpur tehsil area. He also purchased a huge plot of land in the Station Road area. The Lokayukta sleuths said that there were plans to construct a mall on this plot on Station Road. The Lokayukta found Rs 15,000 in cash.
