The wife of a top PSU boss has been caught collecting bribe in gold bricks, the CBI said today, the charge suggesting that the corrupt remain as audacious as ever in spite of the shakedown in high places.

Abhay Kumar Srivastava, the chairman and managing director of Navratna PSU Nalco, and his wife Chandni have been arrested. The CBI said Chandni took three 24-carat gold bricks weighing a kg each in bribe this afternoon in Delhi.

Also arrested were a couple Srivastava and Chandni had apparently employed to negotiate and accept bribes from businesses seeking to deal with the government-owned aluminium company.

“Acting on a tip-off, our officers laid a trap and arrested the four persons. We recovered Rs 29.5 lakh in cash and 10kg gold from their possession,” CBI spokesperson Vineeta Thakur said.

The other couple were identified as Bhushan Lal and Anita Bajaj.

A CBI officer said Chandni had gone to the Bajaj residence in south Delhi to pick up the three gold bricks obtained as bribe from a Madhya Pradesh-based company, which had complained to the investigating agency.

Chandni took the bricks and left with Anita for a Bank of Maharashtra branch to deposit the gold in a locker when the CBI team stepped in.

The locker was in Anita’s name but was used by Chandni, the officer said. “Srivastava and Chandni did not take money directly. Bajaj and his wife used to collect bribes on their behalf,” an officer said.

A search of the locker resulted in the recovery of 7 more gold bricks weighing 1kg each, gold jewellery weighing 188 grams and Rs. 9.5 lakh in cash.

“The CBI officers recovered Rs 5 lakh from Chandni’s handbag. They also got the key of another locker in the name of Anita in the same bank and the second locker led to the recovery of Rs 15 lakh in cash,” CBI spokesperson Thakur said. The total value of the gold seized is estimated at Rs 2.15 crore.

Following the arrests, Srivastava’s home and office in Bhubaneswar’s Nalco Nagar were raided. He had converted the Nalco officers’ club into his official residence.

Srivastava, a mechanical engineer, was for five years the chairman and managing director of CCIL, another central undertaking.
