Says the Corporation in reply to a RTI query on ‘Antilia'

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai supplies nearly five lakh litres of water to Reliance industries' chairperson and managing director Mukesh Ambani's house ‘Antilia' every month, the reply to a question under the Right to Information Act has revealed.

‘Antilia' is Mr. Ambani's 27-floor house in south Mumbai. It, reportedly, is one of the most expensive personal residences in the world.

Water shortage

“When the residents of Mumbai and its suburbs are reeling under water shortage, the Corporation is showing undue favour to the noted industrialist while neglecting the needs of the normal citizens,” social activist Anil Galgali, who filed the question, said.

The Corporation said it provided 2,430 litres a day for domestic/residential use and 15,800 litres a day in commercial supply. This brought up the total supply a day to 18,230 litres.

Mr. Galgali said the water department of the Corporation's D Ward, which makes supplies to the building, billed ‘Antilia' for 4,72,000 litres of water for 27 days between January and February this year.

He said the residential supply, including sewage charges, was billed at Rs. 410, whereas the commercial supply, sewage charges included, was billed at Rs. 15,960.

Request for inquiry

Mr. Galgali said he had requested the Municipal Commissioner to inquire into the quantum of water supplied to other prominent persons and bring in a policy of uniform supply to the residents.
