At a time when farmers often demand compensation for failed crops, Jai Maruthi Devaraj, a ryot of Jannapura in the taluk has set an example on how to reap rich benefits in farming.

His three acre farm with dense banana plantation is hard to miss on Belur road. He has grown plantains, ginger, cardamom, arecanut, mango, sapota, lemons and other fruit bearing trees and plants.

Devaraj hopes to earn a revenue of Rs 7 to 8 lakh from his farm.Speaking to Deccan Herald, Devaraj said he has grown 1,200 plantain saplings of tissue culture G9 breed.

Having procured saplings from a private farm in Hassan, he had own his doubts if they would bear fruit within 14 months. However, now the plants have grown beyond and his expectations.

Devaraj said each bunch of plantain weighs around 70 kg. Even if each bunch weighs a minimum of 50 kg, the total yield would be around 60,000 kg.

He said if the market offers a price of Rs 8 per kg, he can get around Rs 4.8 lakh. With the transportation costs coming to around Rs 2 lakh, Devaraj observed that he would still make a profit of Rs 2.8 lakh.

He has also grown ginger. With none of them being affected by disease, he expects 600 bags — each bag would weigh around 25 kg — and with a rate of Rs 1,000 per bag, the revenue would be around Rs 6 lakh.

Deducting the investment he expects to gain around Rs 3 lakh. Having grown cardamom in his farm, he says he expects to earn Rs 3 lakh. Devaraj said he has invested around Rs 6 lakh on his farm.

He has set an example on how to make profits from even a small piece of land.
