THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Bankfor Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has unveiled an ambitious Rs 5,320 crore plan for various development activities in the state this year.

The bank has allocated Rs 2,075 crore for short-term agriculture activities which can go up to Rs 2,600 crore depending on the successful operations of the co-operative banks in the state.

"For long -term investment in rural sector, NABARD has committed to provide Rs 2,341 crore. The bank has also agreed to sanction Rs 600 crore during the current year through the rural infrastructure development fund. An addition of Rs 500 crore will be disbursed towards projects that are already sanctioned," chief general manager of Nabard, R Amalorpavanathansaid.

The Nabard will also undertake various developmental programmes for the benefit of people staying in rural areas. "This includes formation of joint liability groups, promotion of livelihood activities, skill development initiatives and technology transfer in agriculture and rural development. Nabard proposes to allocate Rs 6 crore towards these promotional activities from various funds deposited with Nabard," he said.

The bank has also committed to improve the bad state of land resources in the state through 136 watershed development projects which will benefit 96,000 acres. "Watershed development is being implemented in Wayanad, Kasargod and Palakkad districts and this year Rs 33.2 crore is being allocated for various water shed programs," he said.

The bank has also allocated Rs 1.6 crore for various tribal development programs in tribal dominated districts like Wayand, Idduki and Palakkad. Around 1,450 tribal families will be benefited this year. "During the discussion with chief minister Oommen Chandy we brought to the notice that the state should take proactive initiatives so that the bank can provide full financial assistance," Amalorpavanathan said.

The CM suggested that Nabard should take initiatives to support the large number of widows and handicapped persons in the state and improve their means of livelihood. "We are in the process of identifying high impact projects for the benefit of rural population with a focus on the poorer section of the society," Amalorpavanathan said. The Nabard has opened residence-cum-offices in far flung areas of the state and the district offices will co-ordinate with it for better functioning. "The Ernakulam and Kollam districts would be supported and monitored by NABARD regional office at Thiruvananthapuram. Similarly, the Malappuram and Pathanamthitta office will be monitored by NABARD office in Kottayam," he said.
