PUDUCHERRY: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development has agreed to extend loan to the territorial administration for constructing additional classrooms and laboratories in government schools.

In the near future, 559 classrooms would be constructed in the Union Territory, Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam told the Assembly on Thursday.

Replying to the debate on the demands for grants to School Education, the Chief Minister said the bank had consented to extend a loan of Rs. 10.53 crore to construct 100 classrooms and 10 laboratories in 24 government schools. Further, NABARD agreed to consider the government's request to provide loan to the tune of Rs 46.10 crore to construct 262 classrooms and 32 laboratories in 82 schools in the rural area.

The government planned to approach the Housing Urban Development Corporation for funding construction of 52 additional classrooms in the urban areas of the Union Territory. If HUDCO agreed to extend loan, the fund would be utilised to improve infrastructure facility in VOC Higher Secondary School, Girls French School, Annai Sivagami Girls Higher Secondary School, Ti. Vi. Ka annexure in Kandoctor Thottam, SRS High School Saram and GMS Angalamman Nagar, Nellithope, he said.

Stating that government would strictly implement the Right to Education Act, he said a special survey would be carried out to identify school dropouts.

In order to further improve the mid-day meal scheme, 12 grams of pulses would be given to students on days when egg was not served.

The government also decided to enhance salaries of primary school teachers engaged on contract basis from Rs. 6,000 per month to Rs. 8,000 from the second year of their service. Similarly, salaries of trained graduate teachers working on contract basis had been increased from Rs. 8,000 to Rs 10,000 from the second year of their service.

Steps have been taken to regularise the services of pre-primary school teachers engaged in the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan programme, he said, adding that their salaries had been increased from Rs. 5,000 a month to Rs. 6000. An expert committee would be constituted to look into the various demands of teachers.
