Over 9000 child labourers throughout 11 district headquarters of Nagaland work in various sectors for about 16 hours a day without proper accommodation, food and education.

According to a survey conducted by the Nagaland government’s Labour Department, the report was revealed by Joint Labour Commissioner of Nagaland Er Nungshiyanger Aier during a programme held at Dimapur to mark the ‘World Day against Child Labour’ yesterday.

He greeted the youth volunteers for taking the pledge to fight for the rights and protection of child labourers in the state and appealed to them to continue their zeal to eradicate the menace from the society.

Nagaland Parliamentary Secretary for Labour and Employment Er Saku Aier, addressing the function as the chief guest, voiced serious concern over the continued rising trend to engage child labourers in the state despite clear-cut policies to protect the rights of children. It has become an obstacle for the growth of the societies by depriving the right to education, food and joys of childhood.

He said the gradual increase of child labour has become a major political, societal, economic and moral challenge for the country at large and said the socio-economic conditions, lack of proper knowledge of education and poverties were the main reason of growth of child labour and a class of society was taking advantage of it. He informed that the state government was taking all-out effort to neutralize the negative impacts of child labour in Naga society through various programmes at both the micro and maxi levels and sought cooperation of the community and NGOs towards eradicating the growing problem.

Project Director Yanger Aier also presented a paper on the child labour scenario of the state.

The programme was jointly organized by the Department of Labour, Government of Nagaland and Community Education Centre Society (CECS). (Agencies)
