Angry residents had initially refused to perform the last rites of the Mumbai acid attack victim

Angry and distraught residents of Narela spilled onto the streets and refused to perform the last rites of local girl Preeti Rathi, whose body was flown back to the Capital early on Monday morning from Mumbai. Preeti had succumbed to acid attack injuries this past Sunday.

However, following a day-long outrage over the incident, the family, relatives and neighbours - who accused the Government of not getting the case investigated properly - came together late in the afternoon to bid an emotional goodbye to their "daughter."

Minutes after Preeti's body was brought to her house at Bhakra Beas Management Board Colony in Narela, angry family members and residents carried the black coffin in which her remains were brought to Delhi, refusing to cremate her until the Centre ordered a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation. They also threatened to block roads leading to the Delhi-Haryana border if their demand for a CBI probe was not met.

The spontaneous emotional protest at the Singhu border near Narela saw residents carrying placards and shouting slogans against the Delhi Police and senior leaders. Police personnel were present in large numbers to prevent any untoward incident and to ensure that the group did not block any major roads.

An unidentified man had thrown acid on Preeti as she got down from the Garib Rath Express at Bandra Terminus in Mumbai on May 2. She was to join the Colaba Naval Hospital ‘INS Ashwini' as a staff nurse. Preeti died on Sunday after being on ventilator support for two weeks. Her right lung was severely damaged in the acid attack and she had also developed a few complications in the upper respiratory system.

Meanwhile at the protest, the victim's aunt said on the condition of anonymity that "the family wants the Government to take this issue seriously. We are talking about a young girl here who was looking forward to a bright future and whose life was taken in the most cruel manner. None of the Central Government officials or the Delhi Police seem to be keen in taking up the case and to ensure that the culprit is caught."

Preeti's younger sister Tanu said: "The least we want from the Government is to show some concern and reassure us that action will be taken against the culprit. Today we are being stopped from protesting to ensure that the law and order situation is maintained, but the Government has to understand that my sister's life was not cheap, the culprit has to be held accountable and they can't wash their hands off the incident."

"My sister should have been cremated with State honours and leaders should have been here at least to express their solidarity with the family. The Maharashtra Government has announced a small compensation and the matter has now been buried. We feel let down by this ‘we-don't-care' attitude of the political leaders, senior government officials and police. We don't want compensation for my sister, we want justice,'' she added.

According to sources, the Maharashtra Government has, meanwhile, decided to hand over the case to the CBI.
