The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) on Tuesday asked the state government to take stringent action against those schools who were violating the Right to Education Act, 2009.

Taking suo motu cognizance of a TOI report, 'Residential Schools Violate RTE Norms' published on December 20, which talked about how elite residential schools like Mayo College,Mayo College Girls (both in Ajmer), Delhi Public School (Jaipur), Neerja Modi School andNiwamat Public School to name a few, are conducting or conducted written test for admissions, the commission said that it was sheer violation of Section 13 of RTE Act.

The NCPCR asked the schools to put on hold their screening procedure. It expressed shocked over violation of law by Mayo School which have influential people on board.

Kiran Bhatty, national coordinator, RTE division, NCPCR, New Delhi said: "It is disappointing that many schools are flouting RTE Act in the state. It is the role of state government to crackdown these schools."

She added that those schools which had conducted admissions through any kind of screening procedure have to re-admit students. NCPCR has urged the government to penalize schools found guilty of breaking law. "They should be penalizing Rs 25,000 on the first offence. With second offence in a row, the government should penalize Rs 50,000," said Bhatty.

In less than a week, the NCPCR took cognizance of TOI report twice on violations of RTE Act. TOI on December 15 had reported that many schools here are flouting RTE rules by holding interviews/interactive sessions.
