NAGPUR: The recent attacks on the security forces interspersed with a spate of civilian killings in eastern Vidarbha's most dreaded Naxal bastion Gadchiroli has set a trail of fear in the tribal district.

With the rebels' annual 'Tactical counter offensive campaign' (TCOC) already underway in their strongholds nationwide, the Naxal violence is expected to escalate in the affected hinterlands. Security sources stated that Naxals generally conduct TCOC in the first half of every year where they aim to undertake all such steps which can send the security forces on the back foot to the extent possible, target government establishments and spread terror with the aim to amass funds and undertake recruitment to enhance the party objective.

Despite an unprecedented security deployment strategically stepped up in last couple of years, Naxal dominations remained unfazed here. Naxals have already jolted the security forces by blowing up a mini-bus carrying Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers killing 13 and injuring 28 on March 27 last month at Pustola in Dhanora tehsil.

Capitalizing on the marginal error by a State Reserve Police Force jawan, the Naxal action team has also eliminated him on Thursday last week in Fulbodhi Gatta, also in Dhanora tehsil.

While the combined central and state security forces have taken up joint operations in the jungles to counter and flush out the Naxal guerillas from their jungle terrains, the rebels' action team has unleashed fresh challenges for them in the towns and villages.

This year, the Naxals have started targeting local political leaders. Sources from the district said that the trend has left many of them in panic. In January earlier this year, the Naxals' action team had eliminated the Panchayat samiti chairperson of Bhamragadh and district block Congress president Bahadurshah Alam.

Now on Friday, the Naxals killed Bhamragadh's Panchayat Samiti's ex-chairperson Girija Bhalavi's husband Pawan Kumar. Sources said that Pawan Kumar was a former commander of Darekasa dalam in early 90s. Girija too worked as cadre with husband in the dalam before the couple was arrested. After release in 2000, they were trying to return to mainstream.

On April 13 earlier this month, the Naxal action team shot dead prominent Nationalist Congress Party of India leader and ex-chairman of Panchayat samiti Kewal Saukar Atkemwar and injured two others in Etapalli town. In the first week of this month, Naxals also killed two youths in Joganguda village in Aheri taluka.
