A three-member of team of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights led by Dr Yogesh Dubuey on Monday visited the proposed Posco steel plant site near Paradip and made an on-the-spot investigation into the alleged use of children by Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS), an anti-displacement forum in the protest blockade for more than three weeks.

The team also visited Badagabapur transit camp and interacted with members of 52 pro-Posco families who were forced to leave their villages due to fear of backlash by the PPSS activists.

The family heads told the Commission that ever since they left their villages five years ago educational career of their children had seriously been affected.

Later, the Commission visited a number of schools in the project area. The members were aghast to witness that schools buildings at Balituth, Dhinkia and a few other places were occupied by armed police forces.

At least 20 platoons of police forces have been deployed in the project area to facilitate the land acquisition process.

The students told the Commission that they were fear-stricken because of the police presence in their school campuses.

At the agitation site, the Commission wanted to know from a few children as to why they had discontinued their studies. The children shot back saying, "When our parents are feeling insecure about their future, how can we stay at home and pursue our studies?"

Most of the children categorically stated that they had voluntarily got themselves associated in the anti-Posco agitation "as it involves our future."

Before leaving for Bhubaneswar, the Commission met PPSS president Abhaya Sahu and discussed him about the children's participation in the anti-Posco struggle. Besides, the Commission also held discussions with the local Jagatsinghpur district administrations on the subject.
