NCRB data show rape accused known to victim most of the time -Rajesh Ahuja

Out of every 100 cases of rape registered in India, the accused is known to the victim 86 times, and in around 8.5% of these known cases the accused happens to be a relative, the 2014 data compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) from across the country has revealed.

Out of a total of 37,413 cases of rape registered in India in 2014, in 32,817 cases, the accused was known to the victim and in 674 of them, the accused was a father, a brother, a grandfather or a son of the victim.

In 966 cases, the accused was a close family member other than a blood relative.

In 2,217 cases, the person accused of rape was a distant family relative while in 8,344 cases, the accused happen to be a neighbour of the victim.

In 618 cases, the accused was an employer or a co-worker of the victim while in 19,368 cases the rape accused was otherwise previously known to the victim.

In Delhi, out of a total of 2,096 cases, the alleged rapist knew the victim in 2,013 cases.

In Himachal Pradesh, in all 283 cases of rape registered in 2014, the accused knew the victim before he committed the crime in all the cases. Similarly in Chandigarh, all 29 rape accused previously knew the victim.
