New Delhi: NDTV on Monday said that it has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging a government order, which has directed its Hindi Channel NDTV India to go off-air for a day.

In a BSE filing, the company said that it has filed a writ petition before the Supreme Court, “ inter-alia challenging the constitutional validity of the said order and the provisions of law pursuant to which the said order has purportedly been passed.”

Last week, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry had directed NDTV India to go off-air for a day on November 9-10, after an Inter-Ministerial Committee concluded that it had violated the programming code during its coverage of the Pathankot terrorist attack.

News Broadcasters Association and other journalist organisations had urged the I & B Ministry to re-consider its decision.

Justifying the move, Information & Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu had on Saturday said that the decision against NDTV India was not based on any “newly invented rule”.

He said that the government had issued a Gazette notification in March, requiring TV channels to limit live coverage of anti-terrorist operations to the briefings of designated officers.
