NEW DELHI: According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4), 2015-16,  the states of Telangana, Tripura, Uttarakhand, West Bengal and the Union Territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Puducherry show promising improvements in maternal and child health and nutrition.

The first phase of the survey covered 13 states and two Union Territories. All the 15  have rates below 51 deaths per 1,000 live births. Infant mortality rates range from a low of 10 in Andaman & Nicobar to a high of 51 in Madhya Pradesh.

The survey shows that almost all mothers have received antenatal care for their most recent pregnancy and increasing numbers of women are receiving the recommended four or more visits by service providers.

More than nine in 10 recent births took place in health care facilities in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Puducherry, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana.

Poor nutrition is less common than reported in the last round of of the survey with fewer children under five years of age now found to be stunted. The survey found that though anaemia has declined, it still remains widespread.

More than half of children are anaemic in 10 of the 15 states and UTs. Similarly, more than half of women are anaemic in 11 of the states and UTs.
