Ghuwati: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Assam government to pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of one Rajib Basumatary of Doimoguri village in Sonitpur district, who was killed in an encounter between suspected NDFB militants and a joint patrol of Assam Police and CRPF personnel in June 2010.

While the police claimed that Rajib was killed when it had to open fire in self defense after a group of NDFB militants attacked them, the victim's family maintained that he was not a militant and was working in a private company.

Interestingly, while the NHRC took up the case and sent certain queries to the state government, the latter did not respond despite having been given sufficient time. Therefore, the Commission held that the state government had no views on the matter and recommended the monetary relief to the victim's family and also called for the proof of payment by the June 13, a spokesperson for the NHRC said on Thursday.
