New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission has sent a notice to the Maharashtra government following media reports that its education department has decided to close down zila parishad schools with fewer than 10 students and shift them to nearby institutes.

The NHRC, in a recent directive, gave the state government four weeks to submit a detailed report.

It said the decision, likely to affect about 1,300 schools, according to the reports, would particularly affect students from villages who cannot afford to study in private schools; so a thorough study was needed to avoid violating the children's right to basic education.

The commission noted that the decision might increase the distance of a school from a student's house, which should, under the Right to Education Act, be less than 1km for students till Class V and less than 3km for Class VI to Class VIII students.

The media reports, carried on December 21, said students of one school set to be closed would be shifted to another 35km away.

A teacher of the school set to be closed has said it would be impossible for his students to attend the new school during monsoon.
