Taking suo motu notice of reports of torture of two minors by the police in Jhundpura, Uttar Pradesh, that too for no cause, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday sought an explanation from the State.

The NHRC issued a notice to the SSP of Gautambudh Nagar, seeking a “factual” report within four weeks. It said the matter was a serious violation of human rights of minor children.

The notice related to the manner in which two boys, Radha Mishra (9) and Munna (12) were dragged to the Jhundpura police post in Sector 11, Noida, at the accusation of a local builder Kamal Kant Tyagi that they stole a bag from his car on November 14.

The NHRC noted that the two were not only beaten up, the police also tied their hands with rope and dangled them from a ceiling fan in the police post.

Be that as it may, the bag was found in the car itself lying on the foot space between the front and rear seats. The builder had suspected these boys merely because he saw them roaming near his car.

After apprehending them, he beat them up before handing over to the police. The matter was reported in the media, the NHRC maintained.
