Bengaluru: With heightened concern over the impact of excessive use of technology — especially social media addiction — on mental health in our cities, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) is planning to come up with an Urban Mental Health Plan.

Revealing this at the 20th convocation of NIMHANS here on Saturday, institute Director B.N. Gangadhar said the current district mental health plan largely catered to issues of people in rural areas.

Traffic jams, pollution

“Unlike in rural areas, the nature of life and addictions are different in urban areas. Apart from technology addiction, urban population has to deal with traffic jams, pollution, competition, and consumerism. We want to look at the impact of these stress factors on the mental health of people,” he said.

Also, unlike in rural areas, the family support system is poor in urban areas. “We need a different plan to ensure that people who need care are not left alone,” he said. Pointing out that the final report of the National Mental Health Survey, which is under way, would give a clear picture on the varying stress factors in urban and rural settings, Dr. Gangadhar said the survey report would help NIMHANS in preparing an exclusive plan of action for mental health issues of people in urban areas.

Models of care

In his address, Union Minister for Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu said there is a need for developing comprehensive models of care and rehabilitation in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda, who conferred post-doctoral degrees, diplomas and fellowships to 162 outgoing graduates, said there has been renewed emphasis on the ongoing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) programme.
