Government, oil companies to work out modalities

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to provide subsidy for up to nine cylinders of cooking gas (LPG) a year to all domestic consumers.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the media here after the weekly Cabinet meeting that the Centre was providing subsidy for six cylinders per household. The State government had earlier decided to extend the subsidy for nine cylinders to people living below the poverty line (BPL). However, on the recommendation of the ruling United Democratic Front, the Cabinet decided to provide the subsidy for nine cylinders to all households in the State. Each household would get as many cylinders as they had used last year at subsidised rates subject to a ceiling of nine.

He said the allotment of subsidised cylinders this year would be in proportion to the remaining months of the year. The government would decide the modalities for providing the subsidy in consultation with petroleum companies. The total outgo to the exchequer for the subsidy was estimated to be Rs.110 crore to Rs.120 crore a year.

No household would be permitted to have more than one connection for obtaining the subsidy. If there was a dispute, the number of families in a building would be taken as equal to the number of electric connections.
