NEW DELHI: Closer to elections, Nitish Kumar's JD (U) government in Bihar seems to be on a slide with the state's GDP growth tumbling down - from a high of 15.05% in 2012-13 to an estimated 8.82% in 2013-14.

Incidentally, the ebbing of growth coincides with the split in the JD(U)-BJP alliance. Nitish had called off the alliance with the BJP in mid-June last year when the financial year was still in its first quarter. Three quarters later, the state's estimated growth has seen one of the steepest falls ever.

BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh has added insult to injury. Led by three-time chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Madhya Pradesh is estimated to grow at 11.08% in 2013-14 as compared to 9.89% in the previous year, according to data from Central Statistics Office (CSO) which has estimated state GDPs as on March 1 based on information supplied by states.

Even in 2011-12, Bihar with one of the lowest per capita incomes in the country had a low GDP growth of 9.58% compared to the previous year when it was 14.95%. But, the difference was not as steep as it is in the current fiscal.

Nitish may find it difficult to explain the uneven growth under his stewardship as no other state has wavered as much. More or less, the economic expansion in most of the states has been consistent.

Take for instance Punjab, which has a similar economy size (Rs 1.73 lakh crore) as that of Bihar (Rs 1.78 lakh crore), but the former's GDP growth has been projected to be 5.30% in 2013-14, up from 4.70% in the previous year.

Or in Haryana with the economy size of Rs 2 lakh crore. The state's economic expansion has increased from 6.52% in 2012-13 to 6.94% in the current financial year. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh and J&K have all shown higher growth in the current fiscal compared to the previous year.

The growth projection for Gujarat for the current fiscal was not available as the state is yet to supply its data to the CSO. But in the previous years, the state had a consistent growth of around 8%.
