Poor financial conditions, reliance on public distribution system among factors that drove change, reduced dietary diversity

There has been a dietary shift among the Bhil and Bhilala tribes of Madhya Prasesh’s Alirajpur and Jhabua districts over the years. Loss of dietary diversity, including little or no consumption of meat, as well as a change in their staple cereal, may impact the health and erode traditional knowledge of the tribals in the country’s largest state, said experts.

Scehduled tribes are a majority in both the districts, according to Census 2011.

This change in their diet started about 15 years ago or so, according to ChildFund India, a non-profit working on malnutrition in children and tuberculosis (TB) patients in MP since the 1980s. “There has been a shift away from consuming bajra and jowar and towards wheat. Many families have also stopped consuming meat,” a representative of the organisation told Down to Earth (DTE).

A variety of factors contributed to this change: Poor financial conditions, move to cultivation of crops perceived to be more profitable, dependence on a public distribution system (PDS) that failed to assimilate the traditional food habits and even faith.

Chickens were among the many animals Madhu Hatila’s family would rear at their home in Sejawada village in Alirajpur when she was in her teens. This was common practice across the district, which was earlier a part of the adjacent district Jhabua.
