It appears there are no takers for the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NAREGA) scheme in Gautam Budh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh. And the simple reason for this is that workers are getting higher wages at private projects and there is no dearth of such projects in Noida.

Under the scheme, over 26,000 job cards were made in Gautam Budh Nagar. Further, bank accounts for 6,367 people and post office accounts for 46 people were opened for this scheme. But only 2,210 people were able to take advantage of the scheme, says project director RP Yadav.

Just 0.27 per cent of the Rs 13.670 lakh assigned for the scheme was spent in Bisarakh during 2010-11. In Dankore, only 3.08 per cent of the fund was utilised, adds Yadav.

What is more significant is the fact that the public works department here could not spend even a single paise of the total allocation of Rs 3 lakh made under the scheme and the amount had to be returned to the government as such.

According to Garima Khere, block development officer, Bisarakh, not a single application has been received for jobs under the rural employment guarantee scheme for 2011-2012.

"Why should we apply for jobs under the government scheme when we are paid much more by private builders" says Ramu, a labourer.

In Noida, a labourer can get up to Rs 250 per day at a private construction site.
