Reacting to complaints of schools flouting Right to Education (RTE) norms, the education department has served a showcause notice to four Delhi schools, which are run by the armed forces. Replying to a question raised in the assembly, Delhi education minister Arvinder Singh said the four schools — Army Public School, Delhi Cantonment and at Shankar Vihar, Air Force Gyanjyoti School, Palam and Naval Children Academy, Chanakyapuri — have been asked top reply as to why their recognition should not be cancelled.

“There are complaints that these schools are not ‘fully following’ RTE norms in admitting children from economically weaker sections (EWS) of the society. Prima facie, the complaints have been found genuine. The schools have been told to reply to the showcause notice immediately,” Singh said.

Raising the question on the floor of the house, Karan Singh Tanwar, the MLA from Delhi Cantonment assembly segment, said the schools have no laid down the criteria of admitting civilians living in the neighbourhood.

“There are several complaints of bias. The civilians living in the neighbourhood are often refused admission. These schools openly flout rules of the Delhi Schools Education Act and the Right to Education act,” Tanwar said.

Promising that strict action will be taken against schools that are found flouting the rules and regulations of the two Acts, Singh said the four said schools have also been asked to clarify their position on the criteria for admission of civilians and the percentage of seats kept for them.

“These schools are likely to submit their reply in the next two days. If the replies are found unsatisfactory, the education department will take necessary action against these schools,” Singh said.
