The issue regarding the seemingly poor response to the national rural employment guarantee scheme ( NREGS) of the central government dominated the proceedings of the gram sabha of the Chandor village panchayat held on Sunday.

It was pointed out that several cardholders under the UPA government's flagship project had later failed to undertake the work allotted to them, thus crippling the progress of the scheme in the village. The program officer of the RDA was asked to take necessary steps in that regard.

Gram sabha members further expressed their ire over the failure of the RDA in not including small and marginal farmers under the NREG scheme. "It was announced that people working in their own fields would be paid wages under the NREG scheme, however, this has not been implemented by the RDA so far. The panchayat has received no guidelines in that regard so far," a gram sabha member pointed out.

Expressing disapproval over the "poor performance" of the panchayat in shoring up its coffers, gram sabha members offered a host of suggestions to tap the revenue resources of the village. It was pointed out that the audit report of the panahayat for 2009-2010 showed that a considerable decline in revenue for the last three years.

Gramsabha members suggested that rents of the premises housing the post office and the telecom department be revised, and that a part of the funds in savings account of the panchayat be kept in fixed deposits.

Sarpanch Stephen Dias assured the gram sabha of taking necessary steps to increase the revenue.

Vigilance and supervisory committees were also constituted with a view to ensure that all development works in the village are done as per the tender specifications.

As the village serves as a favourite location for shooting of films, the gram sabha adopted a resolution demanding that the panchayat charge a refundable security deposit of Rs 5,000 towards such activities, to ensure that the garbage generated is cleaned by the crew before leaving the village.
