NREGA workers are mostly women by Gayathri Sasibhooshan

Kerala has the most number of female national rural employment guarantee act (NREGA) workers in the country, according to the rural development ministry's 2008 assessment. And the projection for the year 2010 showed 95% of NREGA workers in the state would be women.

Why more women come for NREGA work is because men in Kerala are not ready to work for Rs 150 a day, the wage that is paid. But for women, it's extra money. "Men can get anything between Rs 350 and 500 a day for manual labour, so they don't find NREGA appealing," says Tany Abraham, district coordinator, Kudumbashree.

The rise in number of women NREGA workers has helped in alleviating poverty at a micro-level, believes Prof E M Thomas, an NREGA expert who has been closely following the scheme since its inception in 1998. "Most women under the scheme have been able to open a bank account for the first time in their life!"

Studies are being conducted on this rising percentage being responsible for alleviating poverty in Kerala households. "The presence of more female NREGA workers and figures of a notable decrease in households under the BPL category is debatable, but not a mere coincidence," says N Vinodini, project director, poverty alleviation unit. She points out that Ernakulam district alone accounted for one lakh new registration for NREGA cards. "After all a woman paid is a household saved," sums up the project director.
