The national level monitors of the Union ministry of rural development, probing irregularities into the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) received several complaints. These were with reference to the implementation of the scheme in the state, including misuse of funds by two ministers. The committee will tour different parts of the state to probe irregularities and receive complaints from aggrieved parties. While one team is in Hyderabad, another has left for Nizamabad.

The Telugu Desam politburo member, Mr K. Yerranaidu met Mr M.D. Asthana, former secretary, Union government, Lt. Col. D.P. Ramudu, Risiksen G. and Datta Sivani at the Lake View Guest House and submitted a list of irregularities committed by the ruling party members in the NREGS. He complained that the minister, Mr Dharmana Prasad Rao, used his influence to lay a road leading to his house and his son’s quarry in his native village Velupal in Srikakulam district. “Though I complained against Mr Rao with the Collector, no action was taken,” Mr Naidu said.

Similarly, he lodged a complaint against the tourism minister, Mr Vatti Vasant Kumar, accusing him of sanctioning several works for his constituency including constructing a road leading to his shrimp tank when he was the rural development minister. He complained to the team members that though AP High Court disallowed sanction of works by Indiramma committees and district-in-charge ministers, the government still continued with the tradition.

The ruling party MLAs are recommending works worth crores of rupees, flouting court orders, he alleged. Though half the panchayat raj bodies are ruled by the Opposition, the government, in a bid to ensure advantages for ruling party members and their areas, is circumventing the rules to favour them. About Rs 100 crore have been misappropriated, according to government. Though it is mandatory to conduct a social audit every six months, this is not being done. So far only 2,000 social audits were done for 1,100 mandals as against the 12,000 when it was launched six years ago, Mr Naidu alleged. A team comprising Lt Col. A.K. Dayanand (retired), Benny are in Nizamabad to probe the irregularities.
