NEW DELHI: The government is set to recast its focus towards nutrition with a set of new schemes that will take off in the coming financial year. The Union Budget has also increased allocations for the National Nutrition Mission and establishment of new labs for testing food given under the scheme.

Expressing satisfaction with the budget allocations women and child development minister Maneka Gandhi said, "All our schemes have been allocated sufficient funds and this year we will be able to make significant progress in the National Nutrition Mission and implementation of ICDS scheme.''

Funds for ICDS have come down by about 6% to about Rs 14,000 crore this year. However, the ministry has been able to restore the 50% cuts from the last financial year. Allocation for the National Nutrition Mission has been increased from Rs 65 crore to Rs 350 crore.

This scheme envisages digitisation of employee rolls and monitoring of supplementary nutrition through tablets that will be distributed to anganwadi workers.
