BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha governmentresumed land acquisition for the proposed Poscosteel plant in Jagatsinghpur district on Sunday, a day after three people were killed in a bomb blast in the project area. Official sources said government representatives demolished three betel vines at Gobindapur village, restarting land takeover after about a month.

The work was done amid the deployment of about a dozen platoons of security personnel. Jagatsinghpur collector SK Mallick said the administration dismantled the betel vines of Krupasindhu Dalai, Ranjan Barman and Subrat Swain during the day. "Villagers gave up their betel vines voluntarily," Mallick said. "The land acquisition process will continue."

The government was forced to stop land-acquisition work in the first week of February due to stiff opposition from a section of villagers. As the assembly session was to start from February 14, the ruling BJD bosses had apparently decided to go slow on acquiring land for the $12 billion FDI project, but decided to revive the operations since the House is in recess.

The government has so far acquired around 2,000 acres and needs another 700 acres for Posco to begin work on its first phase plant of eight million tonne per annum.

Meanwhile, tension continued in the area following the death of three people opposed to the steel project at Patana village, the epicentre of the anti-Posco movement, about 200 km from here, on Saturday.

The police said the three deceased, identified as Narahari Sahoo, Tarun Mandal and Manas Jena, were possibly making crude bombs behind the residence of one Sura Das when the explosives went off accidentally, killing them and seriously injuring another (Laxman Paramanik, who is admitted at a hospital in Cuttack).

"It is a clear-cut case of some bombs exploding while they were being readied," Jagatsinghpur SP Satyabrata Bhoi said. "Anticipating resumption of land acquisition, they were probably making the bombs to target the police and those who would give up their betel vines." The police have seized blades, gunpowder and other bomb-making material from the spot.

But the Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS), which has been leading the anti-industry movement for over seven years, said supporters of the project had hurled bombs and killed the three people. "Encouraged by the heavy police presence, some pro-Posco people threw the bombs and killed them," said PPSS president Abhay Sahoo. "The bombs were hurled targeting me as I stay in the house behind which the explosion took place."

Pro-Posco villagers rubbished the allegations and demanded an inquiry either by the CBI or the state crime branch.

State Congress president Niranjan Patnaik called for an end to the loss of human lives and asked chief minister Naveen Patnaik "to end his slumber of ignorance and indifference". "The CM should show some concern for the loss of human lives," he said in a media statement. "We are saddened by the plight of people who continue to suffer due to the apathy of the state government. This must end. We have said earlier also, and we repeat, shift the plant site to another nearby locality which is not too far away from the present one and is also vacant."
