On the first anniversary of the farmer-police clash that had claimed four lives last year, farmers of Tappal in Aligarh — who gathered in Jikarpur village on Sunday to observe ‘martyrs’ day’ — demanded that the government honour its commitments, including return of land to farmers who had refused to sell it, within 20 days.

They demanded the construction of a memorial near the bridge where the firing took place on August 14, withdrawal of FIRs against farmers, compensation to farmers who had agreed to sell their land on a par with Noida and Greater Noida, eight per cent of developed land free of cost as given to farmers in Bhatta-Parsaul, and shifting of the agricultural produce market, being constructed in the interior of Tappal village, to a place near the main Aligarh-Palwal road.

Farmers of five villages gathered at the panchayat which was held to mark the occasion. The day’s proceedings began with a “yagna” in the morning to pay tributes to three farmers and a PAC man who were killed in the clash. Among those present were Nutan Teotia, wife of Manveer Singh Teotia, who is behind bars since July 9, and his mother.

Teotia had led the farmers’ agitation first in Tappal and then in Bhatta-Parsaul villages in May. Nutan Teotia said, “There are still four farmers, including my husband, who are being kept in Dasna jail. The farmers of Tappal have demanded their release, and the state government has been given the September 5 deadline.’’

In Tappal, the government had given about 500 hectares of land to the Jaypee Group as a ‘sweetener’ for developing the Yamuna Expressway. Last year, the farmers had organised an agitation demanding higher compensation.

After the violence, the government had bought peace by raising the compensation rate, giving the benefits of the resettlement and rehabilitation policy to farmers of Tappal with retrospective effect, holding out an assurance that the government would not take the land of any farmer who did not want to sell it and promising to solve other grievances related to power supply, poor healthcare facilities, etc.
