The MMRDA is in the process of signing an MoU with the Regional Centre for Urban & Environmental Studies (RCUES) to prepare a Human Development Report on the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). United Nations Development Programme has also agreed to be associated with the report.

The scope of work for the RCUES would be introducing geography of MMR, demographics, economic dimensions, health, education, housing and shelter, quality of life and environment. The agency is expected to submit the report within nine months at an estimated cost of Rs 38.54 lakh.

“MMR is one of the fastest growing regions in the country. The influx of population is so volatile that the entire socio-economic fabric of the region undergoes various changes from time to time. This development report will provide an insight into the further course of action required in our urban set up,” said Ratnakar Gaikwad, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA.

The report will help in reassessing investment strategies, to identify areas for further attention, and guide to accelerate the implementation of various developmental and welfare programs like Livelihood Enhancement Action Program (LEAP). Gaikwad added, “The report would help the Authority to identify key focused locations with the given socio-economic development needing priority-based developmental plans. I am confident that MMR Human Development Report will serve as an important tool in making a comprehensive planning towards achieving ‘A better tomorrow for MMR’ wherein every sector will experience even and simultaneous development.”

The MMRDA has also formed a committee for guidance and advice of the Human Development Report. Earlier, the RCUES has also prepared Mumbai Development Report 2009 which was supported by Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, UNDP and Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.
