The BJP-led Opposition on Wednesday launched its attack on the UPA government over the issue of price rise in Lok Sabha.

Opening the debate, BJP leader Yashwant Sinha said that the BJP did not want the growth of economy if poor were dying of hunger. "Price rise is the worst kind of taxation on poor. The government should take immediate measures to check price rise" Sinha said.

Continuing the debate, the former finance minister said, "the government should ensure that there is no further debate on the price rise."

"Corruption is the biggest cause of price rise," Sinha said.

The former finance minister said the government had huge stocks of food grain but it was not being given to the poor. The food grain are rotting in warehouses, he said, IANS reported.

"Why it is not being given to the poor?" the BJP member asked.

He said the government should bring 25 million tonnes of its stock of food grain to the market which will help bring down food prices.

Sinha said once food prices come down, it will also have an impact on prices of other commodities.

Opposing the proposal to allow FDI in the retail sector, Yashwant Sinha said that the government should not buckle under the US pressure and should not allow companies like Wal-Mart to open shop in India.

The government and Opposition on Tuesday reached a compromise of taking up a debate on prise rise under rules that entail voting.

Sinha will open the debate and finance minister Pranab Mukherjee will reply to it, parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Kumar Bansal told reporters on Tuesday.

A consensus resolution, to be moved in both the Houses, has also been worked out. It reads -- "Despite repeated discussions on price rise in the House, the burden of price rise on the common man is continuing. Expressing deep concern over price rise, this House calls upon the government to take immediate effective steps to check inflation that will give relief to the common man."

The same resolution will be moved in the Rajya Sabha next week and will be followed by a debate and voting (under Rule 167). BJP MP Prakash Javadekar will move the resolution on behalf of his party.
